PMNW Jersey - Ministerial Commendation - Oct 08.pdf

PRISON! ME! NO WAY!!! Jersey have been awarded a Ministerial Certificate of Commendation to formally recognise the hard work, dedication, commitment and success of the Prison! Me! No Way!!! Jersey initiative.

Part of the success of Prison! Me! No Way!!! is down to the unique delivery style and innovative programme content.  They continually revisit all their programmes to ensure that workshop material is fresh, relevant, topical and factual and delivered in a way that will capture young people’s attention where hopefully they will retain much of the factual information being shared with them so they can make the right choices in life.

However, a key part of the success story is down to the outstanding contribution made by those officers who form the Prison! Me! No Way!!! Jersey team - they give up an amazing amount of their own personal time to contribute to the ongoing evolution of the initiative and the benefits that brings to our small community.

Prison! Me! No Way!!! Jersey is fully supported by States of Jersey Police Chief Officer Graham Power and his Senior Ops Management Team headed up by Superintendent Shaun du Val and HMP La Moye Prison Governor Bill Millar and Unit Manager Nick Watkins.

States of Jersey Police Chief Graham Power said: “While it is the role of the police to deal decisively with young people who commit crime we would rather see offending behaviour prevented or avoided.   In this respect Prison Me No Way is the lead organisation in bringing a positive message and appropriate skills to young people.   We all make choices in life and some can turn out badly.   The Prison Me No Way initiative helps young people make the right choices and helps prevent the problems that can arise when choices go wrong.   The States of Jersey Police fully supports the programme and we are delighted that the former Home Affairs Minister decided to award the certificate of commendation which was fully deserved by all involved.”

HMP La Moye Prison Governor Bill Millar commented: “All too often many young people are unaware of the consequences and stark reality that lie beyond what appears to them to be harmless pranks or minor offending, in some instances this offending behaviour spirals to become more serious. The Prison! Me! No Way !!! programme offers realistic advice to young people who may find themselves in a position that requires them to make a difficult choice. The Prison values its partnership with the States of Jersey Police in supporting the Prison! Me! No Way!!! initiative and is extremely pleased that Senator Kinnard has recognised the hard work of all those involved by awarding the certificate of commendation”.

Chairperson of Prison! Me! No Way!!!  Lesley Harrison explained: ‘The initiative is a joint venture between the States of Jersey Police and HMP La Moye supported by various partner agencies such as Fire and Ambulance.

The Prison! Me! No Way!!! Jersey team are tremendous ambassadors for the force and services they represent and I am extremely proud of them and our team achievements and we feel extremely honoured that our contribution to the community and true strategic alliance between the public and private sector, has been acknowledged and recognised in this way”.

Background:

  • The Prison! Me! No Way!!!! scheme was launched in Hull in 1993, ( now known as the No Way Trust in the UK ) and in 2001, it was introduced to Jersey and registered as a Jersey charity in July 2005.
  • The scheme is a joint initiative led by States of Jersey Police and HMP La Moye Prison officers who use a multi agency approach with many other organisations to show young people about the consequences of their actions and what could happen to them if they decide on a life of crime, such as ending up in prison. The message behind the scheme is that everyone has a choice which can affect the direction their life takes.
  • The Jersey scheme was founded by officers from HMP La Moye and States of Jersey Police. The scheme now employs Police Constable Karen Houston who is seconded to the charity as a dedicated co-ordinator, funded by the charity. The scheme is also heavily supported by volunteers from both the prison and police service.
  • Prison! Me! No Way!!! Jersey has the ongoing support of States of Jersey Police Chief Graham Power, HMP La Moye Governor Bill Millar, States of Jersey Fire and Sea Rescue Chief Officer Mark James and Chief Officer Ambulance Service John Moulin.
  • The Prison! Me! No Way!!!  Jersey scheme is fully self funded. The charity currently has a strategic alliance and partnership agreements with the States of Jersey Home Affairs, Housing and Education Sport and Culture Departments and the Lloyds TSB Foundation Channel Islands.
  • The scheme has evolved tremendously over the past seven years and has various projects in place. The main project to date is the Crime and Safety awareness days during which officers go into all eight Island secondary schools and deliver a multi agency all day programme.
