States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service

The States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service is delighted to support the Prison Me No Way initiative by providing specific sea and fire safety advice to the Island’s primary school children.

Why do we provide sea safety advice?
The States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service run two inshore rescue boats which have been responsible for 284 rescues over the last four years. A large proportion of these rescues have been due to people being caught out by our unusual tidal movements and rip tides and a large number of those rescued were children.

We therefore talk about the following safety messages.

Tides:

  • Why there is a need to know the high/low tide times.
  • Where to find up to date tidal information.
  • How many hours there are between high and low tide.

Rip Currents:

  • What is a rip current and how to recognise one.
  • What actions to take if caught in a rip current.
  • What signals to make to assist in people recognising that you are in distress.

Wind:

  • What the difference is between an on-shore and off-shore wind and how to recognise which way it is blowing.
  • What action to take if stuck in a dinghy and blown out to sea. Do you stay in the dinghy or jump out?

Fire Safety:
We also discuss our core business of fire safety and go over the information that the children learnt about during safety in action week.

  • When to test smoke alarms.
  • How to make an escape plan.
  • What action to take in the event of a fire.
  • What phone numbers to call to report an emergency and what information to tell the operator.
